Located in the heart of north Scottsdale, Arizona, Sanctuary Golf Course at Westworld, one of SunCor Golf’s 18-hole championship golf courses opened to the public on November 11, 1999. Golf course architect, Randy Heckenkemper, designed the 6,624-yard, par-71 Sanctuary Golf Course to have an eco-sensitive layout that takes advantage of the land’s natural topography. Sanctuary was built under the supervision and regulations of the Audubon International Institute, primarily within the City of Scottsdale and Bureau of Reclamation storm water retention area. The course is located next to Westworld, a nationally recognized equestrian center and special events facility. “Sanctuary is the very first Audubon International Signature golf course in the Valley of the Sun,” said Tom Patrick, vice president of SunCor Golf. “We are extremely proud to be able to offer a golf course that provides so many opportunities. I don’t think anyone who plays Sanctuary will leave disappointed because there’s something here for everyone. If you enjoy good, risk-reward golf and a beautiful, outdoor setting, Sanctuary is a sure-bet.” To attain the coveted certification as an Audubon Signature Property, the Audubon’s requirements were incorporated into the earliest design phases of the course’s development to manage issues such as wildlife habitat enhancement, water quality management and conservation, waste reduction and management and pest control. “Sanctuary is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for golfers as well as supporting and maintaining a healthy, thriving environment,” said Patrick. “By applying the Audubon requirements to Sanctuary, it not only improves the environment and the condition of the course, but it provides golfers with a very unique golf experience. Our goal was to have Sanctuary be the first Audubon Signature course in the Valley, and we succeeded.”
